Subject: LXNY announcement - Please Post

Bruce Perens, leader of the Debian GNU/Linux Project, will be at
Mariella's Pizza at 225 West 57-th Street in New York City at 6:30 PM on
Saturday, January 25, 1997. Mariella's is located near Columbus Circle,
closer to Broadway (Coliseum Books) than to Seventh Avenue (Carnegie Hall)
and facing the Duane Reade drugstore across the street.

Bruce will meet with as many as possible GNU/Linux/Unix/Other hackers,
users, and enthusiasts. Those who have never seen Linux in action are
also warmly invited to attend. Skeptics about the possibility of
anarchy as a mode of production are particularly welcome.

If possible rsvps from those intending to come should be sent to
[email protected] as soon as possible, so that we have some idea of how
many to expect. But come, even if you do not send a response. If you
are late, that is all right, too.

                     What is Debian GNU/Linux?

			Linux Distributions
Linux is a non-commercial variant of Unix, developed by volunteers all
over the world. Linux proper is an operating system kernel, not an
environment. The next layer around the kernel is called a distribution.
The distribution provides a system: installation/bootstrapping, assign-
ment of pathnames to files, coordination of packages, e.g., with shared
library (matching versions). There are a number of base distributions
(my terminology), including: Yggdrasil, Unifix, Tamu, SLS, Slackware,
Red Hat, MCC, Linux-FT, Debian, Craftworks. Some of these are sold
directly, some are sold by third party distribution companies such as
Springer Verlag, Linux Systems Labs, InfoMagic and iConnect, and some
are repackaged further, often combined with other packages and services,
e.g., Caldera and WGS.

			The Debian Project
The Debian Project, presently under the leadership of Bruce Perens, is,
like Linux itself, a non-commercial worldwide development effort.
Debian GNU/Linux is "a complete Unix-compatible operating system".
Debian is famous for developing a method for checking the dependencies
among its diverse packages and for providing a means to upgrade the
system selectively and "in place". The distribution is available for
free from Debian and many mirror sites, see
http://www.debian.org for further details, including a list of companies
providing the distribution (e.g., on CD-ROM).

Subject: March 11 NYSA Meeting

The next NYSA meeting will be on Tuesday, March 11, at 6:15 pm
at Box Hill Systems Corp, 161 6th Ave, 10th Floor (corner of Spring).
The topic will be "Cross Web Server Authentication" given by Steven M. Jones.

Talk Description:
Many organizations offering information and services on the Web are deploying
multiple Web servers. Sometimes this is to share the load among several hosts,
other times the servers are being deployed and run by completely separate
divisions or groups.

A problem arises in that users must frequently re-authenticate when they
follow a link from one server run by the organization to another. This is not
the ideal customer experience, and I was responsible for producing a solution.
This talk will describe the solution I came up with almost a year ago and
implemented over 2-3Q96. If time permits I'll also note some other work along
these lines, relevant commercial products I'm aware of, and how client side
certificates fit in this picture.

This talk is a preview of the talk I'll be giving at the SANS97 conference in
Baltimore. (http://www.sans.org/97conference2.html)

About the presenter:
Steve's first job was as technical backup and troubleshooter for sysadmins at
MIT between '89 and '91. Since then he's worked mostly as a network and system
administrator dealing with Unix/PC environments and the Internet. Interesting
highlights include a year as the primary firewall jockey for a Money Center
bank. Lately Steve's been working as a contractor, developing an Internet EDI
application using Nortel's Entrust crypto/security framework.

Steve can be reached at: http://www.crash.com

Leader: Tom Holaday, [email protected]

Good News: The series of enhancements to C++ have reached a plateau:
the ANSI/ISO C++ Committee approved "Committee Draft 2"
in November 1996; the language is officially "stable".

Summary: C++'s many new features enable you to write programs and
libraries that cannot be written in any other language.
This has been academic until now, because compilers that
support the new features have not been available, but
that has changed. In this talk, I explore the more
interesting of these new features and some examples of
what can be done with them.

              Previously available
              * Multiple Inheritance
              * Templates
              * Exceptions
              * IOStream library

              Gnarly new features
              * Member Templates
              * Partial Specialization of Class Templates
              * Overloading of Function Templates
              * Template Default Arguments
              * Explicit Template Function Qualification

URL: The above is an extract from Nathan's presentation.
Much more info and code examples are present at:
              http://www.cantrip.org/gnarly.html

Bio: Nathan Myer's expertise includes the C++ Language, the
C++ Library Architecture, Software Engineering in
              general, and Internationalization (I18N).

He has participated in the ISO/ANSI C++ Standard
committee since 1993, and designed the components found
in Chapter 22, Localization. He has worked on most other
chapters of the C++ Library as well, and was also to blame
for one new keyword in the core language: explicit.

// If you haven't guessed by the meeting title,
// Nathan Myers lives in California now :-)

Enjoy the meetings

LXNY April Announcement

Date: Tue, 8 Apr 1997 23:59:32 -0400 (EDT)
From: Mike Smith <[email protected]>
Subject: Linux New York mtg Friday 4/11/97

Russ McManus will speak on GUILE to LXNY on Friday, April 11, 1997
at the second LXNY meeting of 1997.

Russ McManus, serious *n*x hacker and Linux user since Before 1.0, will
speak at Mariella's Pizza at 225 West 57th Street in New York City at
6:30 pm on Friday, April 11, 1997. Mariella's is near to Coliseum Books,
and across the street from the Duane Reade drugstore. Columbus Circle is
near by.

Russ will speak on GUILE, the extension language of the GNU project.
GUILE is GNU's Ubiquitous Intelligent Language for Extension.
[Description follows in a second message.]

As Richard M. Stallman has forcefully pointed out Linux owes much to
Project GNU. Linus Torvalds, before any public statements by Stallman on
Linux, said: "The most important decision made in the design of the Linux
kernel was to place it under the GNU Public License."

A complete working system for a computer, or a system of computers, that
actually allows for work to get done on the machine is more than just a
kernel, and more than just a kernel and some file systems, and some
compilers, and some "applications programs". A programming language which
can control the tasks the system performs in a way similar to the way that
a human being sitting at a terminal runs the system is needed. Such
languages are called "scripting languages". Most Unix shells today come
equipped with their own scripting languages, each one slightly different
from the others. Much of the success of Unix is due to the easy exercise
of the power to control that such shell scripting languages provide the
user. But most old shell scripting languages suffer from a lack of
system. Project GNU has proposed and with the help of many volunteers,
including Russ McManus, written the cleaner and more powerful scripting
language GUILE.

Many hacker projects are better in the dream, in the design, and even in
the coding, than in the use. Hacking the Better is one thing. Everyday
use is something else. Russ McManus works today at Goldman Sachs writing
and supporting a system used for trading international equities in world
markets and uses GUILE in his work. In addition to bug fixes for GUILE
itself, which fixes have been merged into the source tree, Russ has also
written GUILE interfaces to Sybase, Reuter's real time data distribution
library, and he is presently working on a guile-based spreadsheet.

[Description of GUILE and interfaces follows in a second message.]

Russ writes:

If possible rsvps from those intending to come should be sent to
[email protected] as soon as possible, so that we have some idea of how many
to expect. But come, even if you do not send an rsvp. If you are late
that is all right too.

Subject: GUILE

GUILE is the GNU Extension Language; it is a language, a library, and
other things, too. GUILE, GNU's Ubiquitous Intelligent Language for
Extension. GNU's announced plan is to link this library into all GNU
programs that call for extensibility.

What is an `extension language'? An extension language is a programming
language that you can use to extend the functionality of a large appli-
cation. Examples are Emacs Lisp, TCL, some configuration languages, and
macro languages for spreadsheets, databases and word processors.

GNU Emacs is programmed in the C and Emacs Lisp languages and provides
Emacs Lisp for extension and customization. Similarly, GUILE is
programmed in C and Scheme, a LISP dialect.

If you are writing a program that can use an extension language to allow
customization and extension, as most large programs do, you can use
GUILE as the base extension language. Other languages can be bridged to
that base, e.g., Tcl and Tk already can be used. All languages and
libraries that you have tied to that base can be used. Thus, GUILE
allows, in principle, programming language freedom of choice.

September LXNY Meeting

Date: Sun, 14 Sep 1997 03:20:01 -0400 (EDT)
From: Mike Smith <[email protected]>
Subject: LXNY meeting: Caldera + Corel. Wed Sep 17

Bryan Sparks, chief executive officer of Caldera, will speak at the next
meeting of LXNY. The meeting will take place at 5:00 PM on Wednesday,
September 17, 1997, in room 1E05 of the Javits Convention Center.
Todd Whittaker, Market Development Manager for Corel, will be present
and will also speak.

Both speakers will meet with as many as possible GNU/Linux/Unix/Other
hackers, users, and enthusiasts. Those who have never seen Linux in
action are also warmly invited to attend. Skeptics about the possibility
of commercial corporations helping in the production of good software are
particularly welcome.

At the meeting there will be some light food. A number of copies of
OpenLinux Lite, and some other software, will be given away by Caldera.

Caldera is a privately held software company founded in 1994 by Bryan
Sparks, and backed by Ray Noorda, former CEO of Novell. Caldera seeks
to offer a series of packages and services designed to operate smoothly
with already installed mass market proprietary business network
software. The OpenLinux series uses GNU and other free, that is, source
available, hackable, and redistributable, software, and also including,
in some cases, software whose source code is not available. Caldera
also sells networking suites, jumbo office suites, word processors, and
other software. OpenDOS, the descendant of Digital Research's DR-DOS,
is a series of distributions of a radically improved source code
available DOS. A full description of the whole product line may be found
at http://www.caldera.com .

Corel is a publicly held software company whose products include
WordPerfect for Unix, a jumbo office suite, and a general input output
device. Corel sells the WordPerfect suite at a special lower price to
those who run the suite on Linux. The jumbo "office" suite and the
general I/O device, which is called "Barista", are written in proper Java.
The office suite is in beta and freely downloadable.

Todd Whittaker's command includes the Corel special marketing forces
on the Unix/Linux front.

			Linux Distributions

Linux is a non-commercial variant of Unix, developed by volunteers all
over the world. Linux proper is an operating system kernel, not an
environment. The next layer around the kernel is called a distribution.
The distribution provides a system: installation/bootstrapping,
assignment of pathnames to files, coordination of packages, e.g., with
shared library (matching versions). There are a number of base
distributions (my terminology), including: Yggdrasil, Unifix, Tamu, SLS,
Slackware, Red Hat, MCC, Linux-FT, Debian, Craftworks, Caldera. Some of
these are sold directly, some are sold by third party distribution
companies such as Springer Verlag, Linux Systems Labs, InfoMagic and
iConnect, and some are repackaged further, often combined with other
packages and services, e.g., Caldera and WGS.

If you are at the IT Forum/Unix Expo, drop by the LXNY booth (#2684).
If you intend to come, an email to [email protected] as soon as possible,
would help us to estimate attendance. But come, even if you do not
send a response. If you are late, that is all right, too.

majority of Web sites is freeware: most commonly the Apache
       server.
     * Those sites still operating would have little or no active
content. Despite what the Java and ActiveX evangelists would have
you believe, most of the active content on the Web (fill-out
forms, animations, etc.) is generated with freeware programming
languages, and Perl is way out in front of the pack. Sun
Microsystems' first Webmaster, Hassan Schroeder, summed up its
importance: "Perl is the duct tape of the Internet."
     * Most electronic mailing lists would stop. The freeware Majordomo
package is the most popular list manager on the Internet. Oh, by
the way, it's written in Perl.
     * But that wouldn't matter, because email wouldn't be working. The
vast majority of email handling and delivery on the Internet is
accomplished with Eric Allman's freeware sendmail program.
     * You'll be typing "199.201.243.200" into your browser instead of
"www.netaction.org". The Internet's Domain Name System, which does
the mapping between numeric and domain-style (human readable)
addresses, is almost totally dependent on a free software package
known as BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Daemon).
     * Usenet newsgoups would also go away. (Though some would argue that
this would be a good thing.) The collection and distribution of
news articles is managed by INN, another freeware package running
       on thousands of sites worldwide.
     * Much commercial software development would grind to a halt. The
use of core development tools (compilers, debuggers, etc.) from
the Free Software Foundation is pervasive throughout the software
       industry.
     * etc.

End quote.

A Presentation by the Software Publishers Association

www.spa.org

Software piracy (the unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted software) caused an estimated $11.3 billion loss to the software industry in 1996 . No other industry suffers as much loss to simple theft. Soft-ware piracy is an important issue for independent consultants who develop custom applications or resell, install and support off-the-shelf programs.

At the May meeting a Software Publishers Association representative will educate us on software piracy, software management, and the SPA^Rs programs to combat piracy and help users stay in compliance.

The presentation will define the problem, law, and liabilities, and give details of SPA enforcement initiatives such as cooperative audits, litigation, and the Inter-net Anti-Piracy campaign. This will be a great way to learn about software management and the steps you can take to ensure the SPA or other enforcement agencies don^Rt come knocking on your clients^R doors - or yours!

The presentation will conclude with a question and answer session where piracy and copyright issues specific to the consulting industry will be addressed.

Space is limited so please RSVP as soon as possible.

If you missed the April 21 IIS/ASP Workgroup meeting you
missed Michael P. Levy's oust anding presentation on HTTP,
Active Server Page State Management and Scalability Mike
covered how the world wide web works and how it didn't
originally provide a mechanism for managing user session.
He also explained how Active Server Pages provides rich session
management features. Finally he covered how to set up multi
server architectures for managing user sessions across web
server "farms". His presentation included live demos of real
production Internet ASP based web sites that implement state
management in various ways.

See you at the next meeting.

NY Java Sig Meeting

From: [email protected]
Subject: 01/21/99 NYJavaSIG Mtg at NYSIA Summit

NYJavaSIG,

The next meeting of the NY Java Users Group will be held
on the evening of the New York Software Summit/East Coast
Summit for Java Technology conference on Thursday, January 21.
The meeting will be held at FIT in midtown Manhattan (see
below for specifics).

Our speaker is Jim Russell, a member of IBM's Research staff
who will be presenting an overview of the cutting-edge
Java-centric research work from the reknown IBM labs.

	http://www.alphaWorks.ibm.com/

IBM is a big believer in Java Technology. Their alphaWorks
site won best component site in the recent JavaWorld Editors'
Choice Awards at JBE. Jim will be discussing some of these
components and will delve into some very interesting Java
work done in the hush-hush of IBM Research. Should be
fascinating.

                   +++++

In addition to our meeting, this all-day NYSIA conference
(see www.nysia.org) has some well-known experts in the software
development community presenting very informative and
provocative presentations, e.g., Richard Stallman, David Gee,
Jason Woodard, Rinaldo DiGiorgio, Rodney Ryan, Alex Chaffee.

Java Sessions include: Java Servers, Enterprise JavaBeans, JINI,
Java for C++ Programmers, Design Patterns in Java, Enhancing
Java Performance, JDK 1.2 Overview, etc.

Email "[email protected]" to register for the conference. Mention
that you are a member of the NYJavaSIG and the cost will only be
$95 (instead of $140).

Of course, as usual, our Java User Group meeting that evening is free.

Thanks to Cabletron and Avnet Computer Co. for sponsoring this meeting.

Join us for a frank discussion of today's network routing technologies
and how their differences affect your business.

How does the corporate network - the core of developing Intranets -
respond to the mounting pressure for more connections, higher
bandwidth, and absolute integrity?

Learn about these new technologies (e.g., ATM, Gigabit, and
Fast Ethernet) and new techniques (e.g., IP Switching, Layer-3 and
Layer-4 switch/routing) that will give LANs and virtual LANs a
fighting chance in the Internet/Intranet Age.

o What are the fundamental differences between hardware
   and software routing?

o High speed backbone connections (ATM, Gigabit, Fast Ethernet)
   Why? When?

o What is IP switching and how does it differ from Layer 3 routing?
   Layer 4 routing?

o Which type of VLANs (Virtual LANs) make the most sense for you?

o What are the voice applications in an IP network?

Don't miss this valuable seminar!

LXNY January 2001 Meeting

Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 05:24:07 -0500
From: [email protected]
Subject: Tuesday 2 January 2001 LXNY General Meeting: Michael Smith on shell programming and the peril of a secret takeover of Earth by the 4C Entity in alliance with T13

LXNY will have a general meeting Tuesday 2 January 2001.

This meeting is free and open to the public.

The meeting runs from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. After the meeting full and
precise instructions on how to get to our traditional place of refreshment
will be given in clear.

Thanks to support of the IBM Corporation, the meeting is at their building
at 590 Madison Avenue at East 57th Street on the Island of Manhattan.
Enter the building at the corner of Madison and 57th and ask at the desk
for the floor and room number.

Recently, LXNY members have been getting more and more questions from
people who have heard about free software and want to know more. Two sorts
of questions come up:

1. How do I do thus and such using free software?

2. Why use free software?

At this meeting we will start to answer questions of both sorts.

Michael Smith, General Manager of LXNY, will present an introduction to the
*n*x shell. Part of the reason for *n*x's extraordinary success is that
the shell presents to the user a radically object oriented view of just
about everything going on in a running system. The question of whether the
crudity of the view presented is an advantage or an impediment has
exercised flamers on Usenet for twenty years. But one thing is certain:
today, if you know the shell, and you run a free OS, you are master of
your own box.

But by this summer, knowing a free shell may not guarantee you control
over your own box.

Today one of our most important rights, the right to own a computer, stands
in grave peril. Vastly stupid but immensely wealthy and powerful secret
conspiracies stand poised to seize the hard disks of each and every home
and small office computer on the planet.

http://www.t13.org
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/2/15718.html
http://www.eff.org

The plan is simple: require each ATA hard drive to contain secret hardware
and software under sole control of the Directorates of Infotainment. This
hardware and software will be impossible to control by the putative owner
of the hard drive. If four large corporations agree to the proposal, by
the summer of 2001, all new ATA hard drives will be required to contain
such machinery of surveillance and control. ATA hard drives are the most
popular drives in computers used by individuals for private purposes.

We will hear reports on the correlation of forces from members who have
gathered information from official and unofficial sources.

LXNY needs volunteers for the hard work of education and propaganda ahead
of us. If you want to help come to this meeting.

			   David G. Korn
		The AT&T AST OpenSource Collection

1/17/01
Wednesday
6:30pm-8:00pm
IBM Headquarters Building
590 Madison Avenue at 57th Street
Check in at lobby for badge and room number

Please join us for an evening with our special guest David Korn, probably
best known to many as the creator of the KornShell.

http://www.kornshell.com/~dgk/

Over the last twenty years the former Advanced Software Technologies
Department of AT&T Bell Laboratories, now part of the AT&T Network
Services Research Laboratory, developed a collection of software tools
and libraries which were referred to as the AST collection.

Some of the tools such as the KornShell, nmake, and Graphviz are in wide
use and are part of the Foundation Architecture. Some of the libraries are
widely used as well. However, until recently, the source for most of this
software was not available outside of AT&T without a special license.

This talk will describe the AST software collection, the OpenSource license
in which this software is now distributed, and the reasons and benefits of
making this software OpenSource.

More about David G. Korn:

David Korn received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from RPI in
1965 and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from NYU's Courant Institute of
Mathematical Sciences in 1969. After working on computer simulations of
transsonic air foils, he switched fields to computer science and became a
member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories in 1976. He is the creator
of the KornShell, a command language for the UNIX environment, as well as
UWIN, an X-Open library for Windows NT and Windows 95. In 1984, he was
inducted as a Bell Labs fellow. He currently works for AT&T Research in
Florham Park, NJ and resides in New York City.

David presented an interesting USENIX paper on porting from Unix to NT 4.0,
in which he concludes "There appear to be few if any technical reasons to
move from UNIX to Windows NT. The performance of Linux exceeds that of NT
4.0 and Linux appears to be more reliable."

industry, and hospitals.

She was the President of Office Technology Academy (1984-1990), one of
the first computer-training schools in the Midwest, where she developed
quick-learn training programs that helped underemployed high school
educated adults get high paying jobs with the minimum amount of in-school
downtime. She left that position due to a lower back injury and severe
computer-related injuries in her right arm. During her recovery, she
founded Clear Concepts, a Milwaukee-area consulting group that managed a
wide range of projects related to the software applications.

Peer to Peer Programming with Java Technology
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

This talk will cover the basics of peer to peer (P2P), then help you
evaluate the suitability of Java for a particular P2P application. The
character of projects that use Java, such as Magi and OpenCola, is very
different from that of projects that use native APIs, such as Napster
and Groove. The differences are most visible in the case of Gnutella,
which exists in both Java and native versions. These differences will
be discussed in detail.

Issues to be discussed include:

	Why Java and P2P fit
	XML support
	Network centric coding
	OS integration
	Desktop web servers
	Remote services
	Devices as peers
	Hub-and-spoke architectures

Lucas Gonze is Cofounder and CEO of WorldOS Corp., a decentralized
infrastructure provider and P2P consulting group. His work prior to
WorldOS includes a communications engine for online multiplayer games,
an encrypting proxy, a multiplexing socket proxy, a real time SQL
gateway, two web banks, two web bookstores, and numerous other
e-commerce sites. He is a regular commentator on P2P and founded the
decentralization list.

New York Windows NT/2000 User Group Newsletter
                            01/18/01

=======================================================================

-------------------------------
Requested Topics Survey Results
-------------------------------

My thanks to all of you who responded to my recent request for topics.
I guess you are out there after all :-)

The following is the results of the survey. Clearly Active Directory
and Exchange 2000 are the hottest topics. We will work on scheduling
them soon. If you have practical experience in these areas and would
be willing to present, or know of someone good, let us know.

Although the subject of Certification only received one request it keeps
coming up periodically. Other NYPC group, such as the C++/Java SIG have
an interesting concept called a Workgroup that meets independently of
the main SIG. It meets either monthly or (in some cases weekly) to study
a specific topic. I don't have time to do this but if any of you want
to take it on I can help you get started.

SURVEY RESULTS
--------------

5 requests for Active directory
-------------------------------

The more on Active Directory, the better.
All or any subject about AD are welcome.

Designing and Implementation of Active Directory.

Design issues in Active directory.

Designing the Windows 2000 Active Directory.

Group Policy with Active Directory and without.

4 requests for Exchange 2000
----------------------------

Disaster Recovery for Exchange 5.5/2000 Offline/Online restores for the
Information Stores. (or one of the stores in Exchange 2k.)

Windows 2000 and various 3rd party backups .... Specifically Exchange
and mailbox level backups and restores.

Exchange 2000 Exchange 2000, upgrade and migration

3 requests for W2K/Back Office Deployment
-----------------------------------------

BackOffice 2000/SBS 2000 deployment

Intellimirror

Best practices others are putting in place based on
their experiences with Windows 2000.
I wonder if you could get someone who's completed a large deployment
to speak? ?

2 requests for Clustering
-------------------------

Windows 2000 clustering

Application Clustering eg Exchange 2000, SQL 2000, etc

2 requests for IIS
-------------------

Internet security (locking down ports, services, and policies) for
Win2k Server running IIS and FTP

Pros and cons to running software vs. hardware firewalls (and ones with
monthly subscriptions)

Also, IIs integration with Office 2000 for office productivity would be
great too.

2 requests for Scripting
------------------------

ADSI Scripting

VBScript

2 requests for Security
-----------------------

Windows Security.

Improving Server security

2 requests for ISA
-------------------------

ISA Server

I'd like to see something on Microsoft's new Server products:
Internet Security & Acceleration Server

The rest all received 1 request
-------------------------------

How Win98, Win98SE, WinME, and WinNT interact differently (network
features) with Win 2k Server. (what is possible with some of the OSes and
not others [i.e. running the more secure NTLM 2.0 is possible with only
Win2k clients?])

Pros and cons in soft-RAID vs. hard-RAID and SCSI vs. ATA66 RAID cards
(examples on best practices for RAID-ing an Exchange, IIS, and SQL Server.)

Windows 2000 - Capacity Planning for Domain Controllers.

DDNS, DHCP, Relay Agents & WINS integration.

Windows 2000 Licensing

Windows Streaming Media Server

Integrating with Linux with common authentication

merits of each will be discussed in a panel forum, and
